Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple lies in the green, water-laced country of Kuttanad, about 14 km south of Alappuzha town. The black stone idol shows Krishna as Parthasarathy, Arjuna's charioteer, with a whip in one hand and a conch in the other – yet devotees love him as the child Unnikannan, and the temple is often called the Dwaraka of the south.
For most visitors the name Ambalappuzha means one thing first: the famous palpayasam, the creamy rice-and-milk payasam offered to the Lord every day and taken home as prasadam. The temple is also close to the heart of Malayalam culture – the poet Kunchan Nambiar is remembered here as the creator of Ottanthullal.
The best-known story of Ambalappuzha is about a game of chess. The local king, a keen player, was challenged by a wandering sage, who asked only for rice as his prize – one grain on the first square, two on the second, four on the third, doubling every time. The king lost, and soon realised that all the granaries of his kingdom could not pay such a debt. The sage then showed his true form as Krishna and told the king he could pay little by little, by serving payasam to pilgrims at the temple every day. Devotees believe this is how the palpayasam tradition began, and also that Guruvayurappan himself comes to Ambalappuzha each day to receive it.
Another story tells how the temple got its idol. The first idol was found to be unsuitable, and a fitting one was brought from the Karinkulam temple at Kurichi. The party carrying it is said to have halted overnight at Champakulam, and the Champakulam Moolam boat race on the Pampa is still held in memory of that journey.
The temple itself is believed to have been built by Pooradam Thirunal Devanarayanan Thampuran, ruler of the small kingdom of Chembakassery, sometime between the 15th and 17th centuries; the kingdom later became part of Travancore. In 1789, when Tipu Sultan's army threatened Guruvayur, the Guruvayur idol is said to have been brought here for safekeeping for some time. Kunchan Nambiar is believed to have first performed Ottanthullal on the temple premises, and the mizhavu drum linked with him is still shown here. Today the temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board.

Traditional Kerala dress is expected. Men usually wear a mundu and remove their shirt before entering the inner temple; women wear a saree, set-mundu, a long skirt with blouse or a churidar. Rules can change, so please follow the temple's current notices.
By the temple's tradition, entry to the inner temple is for Hindus; please follow the temple's current notices. Leave footwear outside and ask before taking photographs.
The palpayasam is prepared in limited quantity each day and is much in demand, so it may run out early. Ask at the temple counter about how to get it on the day of your visit.
Mornings are quieter. The ten-day Arattu festival in Meenam (Mar–Apr), Ashtami Rohini, weekends and holidays are busy. A visit in the monsoon months lets you see Kuttanad at its greenest, and in Mithunam (Jun–Jul) you can combine it with the Champakulam boat race.
